Information and
Exhibition Design

Coloropoly is an exhibition intended to educate viewers about the history of redlining in the United States.

Redlining is a discriminatory practice of denying services to residents of certain areas based on race and ethnicity.

The original monopoly game was used as a design reference.

Classifications were color-coded onto the maps:
green meant best, red meant hazardous. Neighborhoods with large black or minority populations were typically colored red, meaning authorities deemed it risky to give those residents a loan.

Since homeownership is one of the most important ways in which Americans build wealth and pass it on to the next generation, it is essential for people to learn about this dark history.

To create an engaging exhibition experience, I created a series of illustrations based on real photos of each city using different color themes to indicate their relationship to redlining.

To help the audience learn about redlining, I created take-away cards for each city on the map, which include details of the stories and infographics. These cards are carried inside each panel.

Related photographs are also included on the back of the takeaway card. Redlining is never a game, it is what happen before in the land we are living in now.
